Properties of Thyme and use of dry Thyme in the kitchen.

The Thymus belongs to the Labiatee family and is native to the western Mediterranean areas. The plant needs a mild and generally warm climate, its leaves are small and elongated, green-grey in color and covered with down.

Its properties are mainly linked to the presence of thymol, a powerful antiseptic, antispasmodic and vermifuge. It also has digestive properties, and is effective against inflammation of the respiratory system.

In the kitchen it is highly appreciated for its organoleptic qualities and digestive properties. Furthermore, as oregano and laurel also dry thyme does not lose its aroma, which is why it is also used to prepare particular liqueurs and wines.

In ancient times its tonic and strengthening properties were recognised, and it was also indicated for regularizing the menstrual cycle.

Before leaving for battle, Roman soldiers washed themselves with water and thyme because they believed that the plant instilled courage and strength. In the Middle Ages, a sprig of thyme was placed under the pillow to ward off nightmares and women embroidered it on the knights’ insignia as a sign of good luck.

Since ancient times, cooked in wine it has been used to combat respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis, simple colds and coughs, or for bladder infections. Very often it was used to prepare disinfectants. In many cases it was also used against headaches.

It is an excellent skin disinfectant and, since it stimulates blood microcirculation, it has an anti-fatigue action on the face. In the treatment of oily hair, thyme essential oil can be added to shampoo to restore a normal level of sebum on the scalp.

Decoctions and infusions of thyme are still used today to wash wounds: also excellent for disinfecting the oral cavity.

Dried thyme leaves are used to prepare digestive herbal teas because it has antispasmodic, antimicrobial and expectorant properties.

Rinses with thyme can treat laryngitis, gastritis, throat inflammation; a thyme herbal tea can be a valid help against headaches.

For external use it can represent an excellent disinfectant and promotes the healing of wounds.

Thyme essential oil is used in cosmetics because it has many beneficial properties.
